Using cheats in Mednafen [message #4173] | Fri, 04 September 2015 02:53

I've been reading around the forums, and I thought I had figured out the cheats, but they don't seem to be working. I know that the code is correct because it works just fine in KegaFusion, but I would love to have them work here. I'm playing Streets of Rage 2 (USA) 1. I found a Game Genie code for 99 lives: NM6T-AAF0 2. I converted it to an address and value: $0000f9b6:0062 3. I added the cheat via Mednafen's console as below: Name: 99 Lives Type: R (I'm really really confused on what this does) Address: $0000f9b6 (People said the $ is necessary) Byte length: 1 (This is another setting I am confused about) Value: 62h (People said the h makes it hex) Enable: Y Add cheat: Y When I do this, the code seems set up properly, yet doesn't do what it is intended to do. When I put the same address and value into KegaFusion (with the same ROM) it works just fine. Am I doing something wrong? Thank you for your help, anyone!

The Sega Genesis emulation in Mednafen currently does not support Game-Genie style cheats, only high-level periodic RAM replacement style cheats(Action Replay style); for reference, if an emulated system does support Game-Genie style cheats, you would see 'S - Substitute on reads.' and 'C - Substitute on reads, with compare.' as available types when adding the cheat.

Ah, okay. I didn't realize that there other choices for cheat type. Thank you for clarifying! I looked up the difference and found out that Game Genie modifies ROM and PAR modifies RAM. What exactly is the difference between RAM and ROM cheats? Is there perhaps a way for me to convert the Game Genie codes to Pro Action Replay so that I could use them with Mednafen? Or are there sites that have PAR codes for Sega Genesis?

I did some more research, and I think I understand. Is it that Game Genie actually edits the ROM data directly, while PAR edits things stored in memory? If that is the case, I can see how you really can't convert between the methods. I found some information on hacking ROMs directly, and eventually found Game Genie Guy, and that worked perfectly. For others who were confused like me and want to mod a ROM permanently with Game Genie codes, you can use the link below: Game Genie Guy! That being said, I also found BSFree. These codes are Pro Action Replay and I tried to insert one, but I must be doing it incorrectly. Here's the code --> FFFD07:63 99 Lives Here's what I put in: Name: 99 Lives Type: R Address: $FFFD07 Byte length: 1 Value: 63h Enable: Y Add cheat: Y Is this correct? Do I need to convert the cheat? Thank you again for all your help! [Updated on: Fri, 04 September 2015 14:39]

I got help on IRC regarding the codes. They told me to change anything that starts with $E1 or higher to just $E0. It worked! They told me it was a bug in Mednafen. If anyone else is having that issue, I hope this helps you as well! Big props to the Mednafen team.
