Has there ever been a point where you were looking through your games collection and wondered, “Huh, whatever happened to this title?” Well, I’ll be taking a look at videogame standalones/franchises and the lead up to their eventual absence. With that being said, I’ll be asking the question: “Whatever Happened To… Crysis?”

Let me just start off by saying that the question; “Whatever happened to Crysis?” can really be expanded to; “What on Earth happened to Crytek?”. Well, I do tell a lie, they are still making games, it’s just that the games they’re making have no release date in sight. The most notable one being, Hunt: Showdown which is set to come out… eventually? Soonish? Somewhere in that ballpark, I’m sure.

Actually, now that I think about it, Crytek has been doing more than just making games with no release dates. What could that be? Well, I’ll give you a hint, it has something to do with not paying their employees… actually that’s a pretty good goddamn hint. Yes, though I’m sure it’s old news to everyone now, Crytek hasn’t been the best at keeping up with the paycheques to the hardworking developers at their company. As one can find in the link here. It seems that from 2016 (and even 2017) that several employees have been less than pleased with the financial situation of Crytek.

Alongside that minor issue (obviously not minor), Crytek hasn’t been as busy as usual in the AAA game department. Especially in regards to their biggest franchise, Crysis, which had its last entry released in 2013. But why? Well, according to VideoGamer.com, this was due to the developers switching perspectives around three years ago when they decided to pursue free-to-play games instead of the ‘bigger’ titles. Which is fair, but also a bit strange as Crytek also stated that the future of Crysis would be unclear, possibly implying a new game somewhere down the road.

Games don’t have cheat codes in them anymore. Which begs the question, what happened to them? To answer that, we first need to understand how cheats came into existence in the first place.

Well, it certainly has been unclear to fans of the franchise who’ve been waiting for another installment to their beloved series. A series that, uniquely, doesn’t really have a bad entry among its ranks. The first title absolutely crushed it in the reviews department, scoring well across the board. This being due to the mind-blowing visuals (even today) that the CryEngine was able to provide and the gameplay that made things both fun and challenging.

Then, moving to the second title, things were still as fresh as ever. The graphics were, once again, stunning in every sense of the word and the gameplay was entertaining from beginning to end. Reviewers were a little bit harder on Crysis 2 than Crysis, but it still received excellent scores.

Finally, we move to the third game that, you guessed it, continued the trend of scoring well and being fun. Crysis 3 did have a bit of a noticeable bug problem in a few places, but it wasn’t enough to derail any positive momentum it had moving forward. Long story short, Crysis 3, along with the first and second titles, are all solid games that everyone should try if they get the chance.

Moving away from the games and the shady business practices (well, not to much from shady business practices), that should be all there is to say in regards to both Crytek and Crysis, right? Wrong. Fellow GameGrin writer, Gary 'Dominoid' Sheppard, wrote a piece in regards to the Crytek trying to compete with Amazon by offering to CryEngine to indie developers and the like. This, along with another certain situation that I’m sure many of you are aware of, may be a core reason as to way Crytek hasn’t gotten around to a possible fourth entry into the Crysis series (i.e., a lack of hold on their engine.)

Speaking of engines (as well as that situation I mentioned), the lawsuit between Crytek and Cloud Imperium Games (the creators behind Star Citizen) has certainly got to be a factor in time taken away from making a sequel. So, all this taken into account, what happened to Crysis? Well, despite the positive reception towards the trilogy, Crytek apparently had a change in perspective (as mentioned earlier) where they decided to invest in the free-to-play market instead. Along with that, the lack of payment towards employees and the multiple issues surrounding their engine certainly had an impact towards a new game coming out. Also, with the recent development of their Hunt: Showdown game, I would honestly say the possibility really doesn’t exist for Crysis to come back, at least for now.

Hytale quickly became the most anticipated video game of the year and one of the most-watched video game trailers ever created. Gamers began to dream of the endless possibilities that Hytale would soon offer them, and they couldn’t wait to get their hands on the game. The YouTube algorithm picked up every single video commenting on the trailer, showing reaction after reaction of the epic footage. Hundreds of YouTubers jumped on the train, explaining what they wanted in Hytale and what on earth the game was even about. The topic blew up and then… it went quiet. So, what ever happened to Hytale? Let’s find out.

In 2018, Hypixel Studios announced a game that would end all video games; a game that would incorporate all gamer’s dreams: roleplaying, adventure, action, sorcery, and creative possibilities beyond belief. The trailer broke YouTube in its first day and continued to gain traction in the industry and beyond. The studio behind the game is the same studio behind Hypixel, one of Minecraft’s biggest servers, which has hosted over 18 Million unique players and counting. The incredible work they did modding Minecraft and developing the server to maximum potential was great news for Hytale, which would receive all that talent and determination. If the server was any indication of Hytale’s future, then it’s fate was sealed, and it would be an incredible game.

Hytale was the product of developers who wanted creative and administrative control of their project. This idea spawned all the way back in 2013, when Minecraft added new terms and conditions for servers, preventing microtransactions that affected gameplay. The Hypixel revenue declined by 85% and the developers realized that they weren’t in control.

Now, Mojang was completely right to cancel pay-to-win mechanics, especially for a game that already costs money to play, but more power to the Hypixel team who decided to venture into the risky world of indie game development. Using 100% internal funding, Hytale was soon underway.

In a reflection of Hypixel Studio’s previous project, Hytale is a voxel-based game with similar mechanics to Minecraft. With creative potential and a focus on building, Hytale seems to be a Minecraft clone. That is where the similarities end. Hytale is planned to be so much more than anything Minecraft offers. Not only will they focus on creation, but also on adventure, with built-in roleplaying mechanics, monsters of all kinds, and worlds to explore that blow Minecraft’s socks off. They promise expansive worlds, immersive combat, and an emphasis on exploration and questing.

The procedural generation in Hytale will keep you on your toes with every mountain, river, or cave you trek though. There will be monsters at every turn and treasures to uncover. The Hytale website explains, “As you traverse each generated landscape, you’ll piece together the history of the world through handcrafted adventure scenarios. You might encounter a mage’s tower overrun with monsters, descend into an underground cavern, or take on a colossal boss monster. With a wide variety of scenarios available at launch, no two adventures will be the same.” The kind of depth in Hytale would be my dream video game. With endless possibilities, the game seems to be everything I want and more.

Hytale is also going to incorporate a lot of things from Hypixel, with competition in mind every step of the way. The website says that mini games of all kinds are going to be at the forefront of the game, and players can run their own servers or join official ones to compete for glory and more. With every promise, Hytale becomes more and more of a dream.

Sometimes, though, our dreams become too much, and it is obvious that the developers bit off more than they could chew. With the unexpected success of the trailer and an ever-growing audience, the expectations for Hytale rocketed too quickly to hold onto. Soon, delays to the game’s release were announced and the mystery of Hytale’s arrival loomed over everyone’s minds. Then, it all vanished.

With trends changing from moment to moment, Hytale, and all its excitement was drowned out. The “hype-train” left the station before many could even get their tickets. Hytale was thrown in the basket with other titles that seemed too good to be true, like Cyberpunk 2077. The only remedy was that the game’s release wasn’t rushed and hopefully won’t fail to live up to expectations like some other games. *Cough* No Man’s Sky *Cough*. Ultimately, Hypixel Studios made a good decision to live up to their promises from the get-go and deliver on this massive experience that everyone hoped for. But is it too late?

Hytale is no longer at the forefront of gaming news. Fall Guys and Among Us have stolen the mantle of YouTube trends and there are plenty more games that overshadow Hytale. The once ground-breaking trailer seems to have fallen off the face of the earth, much like Star Citizen and Beyond Good and Evil 2. 57 Million views is nothing to laugh at, but unfortunately, Hytale has slipped our minds.

The lack of promotional material and YouTube videos could be the biggest factor in the strange vanishing of Hytale. When the trailer was released, hundreds of YouTubers began creating content related to the trailer, promoting-the-heck of the game free of charge. The publicity was so powerful, that within the first month, 31 Million people had watched the trailer, and millions more watched reaction videos, video essays, and other Hytale-related content. Then, like a flock rushing to their next meal, those creators abandoned Hytale as a source of content and the free publicity died away. YouTube no longer recommends the trailer and the wait for Hytale became too long for people to stay interested.

There is some good news for Hytale, though. Last year, Hytale was acquired by Riot Games, which gives a lot of people hope for when it eventually comes out. Riot is known for delivering massively fun games with titles like League of Legends and Valorant under their belt. The advice the large gaming studio can offer is priceless for the Hytale team, which can only lead to bigger and better things. There are also over 2.5 Million people already signed up for access to the Hytale beta and will be updated with any information that the studios have to offer. Most notably, Hytale was nominated for “Most Anticipated Game” at the 2019 Golden Joystick Awards.

Perhaps Hytale isn’t totally under the radar, but there is no doubt that the hype has crashed quite a bit since its initial announcement. There is a lot of speculation about whether or not Hytale will fulfill its promises, but both Riot and Hypixel Studios promise a 2021 release date. Whether we can believe them is an entirely different video.
